The brief
We were called to take a deep dive and critique our design process as the first project on our MA course. After taking a deep dive into my own creative process, I recognized that my biggest limitation so far as a designer has been a fear of imperfection within my process. Noticing that this was limiting my creativity and the projects I took on, I explored this theme through this project.
The piece
I produced a collection of clay artefacts that were naturally imperfect, letting go of control by designing a process that would deliberately cause failure. With a strong understanding of the CNC milling process, I adapted this to create a design process that would deliberately fail. By putting unfired clay onto a former on the mill, I allowed for a range of unique artefacts to be created from the STL files Is sent to mill. As the clay material is soft, the mill reacted in beautiful but unintended ways to create this "series of failures". By seeing the beauty in these artefacts and watching them "fail" as they milled, I faced this need for imperfection and by confronting it, began to overcome it.
